Lois Carol Wheatley
Summary: With an advanced degree in English, my professional experience has been focused primarily on promotional, academic and feature writing. For seven years I was a staff writer in the marketing department of a daily newspaper. Prior to that I attended graduate school and served on the editorial staffs of two academic journals. In a previous position, I was Director of Publications for a small company that targeted its books, newsletters and direct mail to the medical profession. Selected accomplishments: 1995-2002: Staff writer for The Herald-Sun newspaper in Durham. From 1997-2002, regular features for the news room of The Chapel Hill Herald included full-length “Hometown” pages, Hillsborough on Thursdays and Chatham County on Saturdays. Special sections for the advertising department were sometimes business guides or directories, or more often event-driven, i.e., the Chatham County Arts Council Studio Tour or the annual Hillsborough Candlelight Tour. For the Herald-Sun Raleigh Extra (1995-97), the scope was expanded, to include photography and page layout (in addition to research and writing) for special sections focused on the arts, family-oriented activities, home and garden, health and small business. Also recruited and edited contributing writers. The Raleigh Extra was closed in 1997 and my position was reallocated to the main office in Durham. 1993-95: Graduate assistant in the English Department of East Carolina University, doing page layout, proofreading, cite checking (complying with the MLA Style Manual) and writing for The Concord Saunterer (annual publication of the Thoreau Society) and the North Carolina Literary Review. Also taught freshman composition for two semesters and assisted in the Writing Center tutoring students in writing, research (library and Internet) and computer skills. During the time I was in grad school at ECU, I wrote a monthly column for the Greenville Independent, clips from which are available on this website. 1991-94: Director of Publications, The Medical Management Institute. Revised and updated books used in workshops, wrote and laid out two monthly newsletters and created direct mail pieces promoting books, workshops and newsletters. Self-taught desktop publishing on a Macintosh computer, developing proficiency with Aldus Pagemaker and Quark XPress. Also negotiated with printing companies and reviewed blueline proofs. 1987-91: Regional office of Pizza Hut, Marketing Department: Served as liaison for home office (Wichita, KS), advertising agencies and regional/district/area managers on radio, television, print and in-store promotions. Prepared market share data for presentations using Power Point, maintained restaurant database using Microsoft Works and prepared budget spreadsheets in Excel. 1980-86: Law Firm of Wald, Harkrader & Ross, Washington, D.C.: Worked as a legal assistant in a large federal regulatory practice while attending paralegal classes at University of Maryland. Academics and activities: Master of Arts in English, 1998, East Carolina University, 4.0 average, emphasis on multicultural literature. Bachelor of Arts in English, 1979, University of Maryland, emphasis on classical literature. An adaptation of my master's thesis, "Women Writers of Black Mountain College," recently published in special ten-year anniversary issue of the North Carolina Literary Review. Certificate in Dreamweaver MX at Wake Technical Community College, 2003, a course in Web site design. |
